Our view or Jesus’ view?

You have heard that our ancestors were told…

You have heard the commandment that says…

You have heard the law that says…

Then Jesus replies, “But I say…”

I read these statements today out of Jesus’ sermon on the mount (Matthew 5:21-48), and it made me wonder if there were things that I know because I had “heard it said” and they don’t match up to what Jesus says?

There are definitely things that I cling on to tightly, they might even be good things, that cause me to miss the great things that Jesus wants for me. I need to learn to be more attentive to what he says rather than to what I have heard.

Based on what Jesus said, I believe it is even possible for me to run to scripture in place of running to him. Maybe I need to turn to Jesus in prayer after I have read scripture and say, “Jesus, this is what I’ve heard, what do you say?” I am gaining a greater understanding that in order to please Jesus, I need to know what he thinks. His ways are not my ways and his thoughts are not my thoughts, so wouldn’t it make sense that my interpretations may fall short of his desires.

What are your thoughts?

yes! we do often turn to scripture it by it’s self. there are too many individual doctrines that are proof of that! thanks for the perspective shake up!

The more I read Scripture, the more I recognize the huge difference between good things and God things.
